What is Building Information Modeling? There's a lot more than just 3D CAD software

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is changing how buildings, infrastructure, and utilities are planned, designed, built, and managed. It is a process involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places.  Many people think of traditional CAD programs, such as AutoCad, as generators of two-dimensional technical drawings (plans, elevations, sections, etc.) and  BIM programs, like REVIT, as being able to (only) produce 3D Renderings.

Building information modeling extends this beyond 3D, augmenting the three primary spatial dimensions (width, height and depth) with time as the fourth dimension (4D) and cost as the fifth (5D), etc.  BIM therefore covers more than just geometry. It also covers spatial relationships, light analysis, geographic information, and quantities and properties of building components (for example, manufacturers’ details).

BIM design tools allow extraction of different views from a building model for drawing production and other uses. These different views are automatically consistent, being based on a single definition of each object instance. When used to it’s fullest potential, BIM goes beyond the planning and design phase of the project, extending throughout the building life cycle, supporting processes including cost management, construction management, project management and facility operation.

SoCalNOMA 2015 Summer Camp Flyer

URBAN DESIGN STUDIOS is a proud supporter of The Southern California Chapter of The National Organization of Minority Architects. SoCalNOMA seeks to advance and support the education and careers of those who have been historically under-represented in the field of architecture and various allied design/build professions.  Our company President and others donate their time to planning the annual Architecture & Engineering Summer Camp for Middle School and High School students. Camps are conducted annually, around the nation by local, NOMA Chapters.  The SocalNOMA camp will introduce students to the design fields and show them how they address a recognized need within their community. The program is designed and taught, primarily although not exclusively, by local African-American architects.
